Organizing the Clutter in the Closet

When it comes to clutter, the problem is usually because “people have too much stuff!”  And they tend to hold on to it to the bitter end.  Once you can admit to this, then you’re on your way to organization.

Closets were designed to be a place for order.  People can become too weighed down by possessions so by storing these items in a space of its own, you can give an impression of light and openness.  And with this openness, you make your surroundings less complex, which therefore creates a sense of calmness and peace.

I know that many of you think that organizing the closet seems like an infinite job, that you just cannot get yourself to do, but remember this:  Clutter in the closet is like clutter in the mind.

Get the clutter out and you’re FREE!  The reward is beyond belief.  Because when the clutter is gone, it’s like a refreshing, a renewal, a new beginning!  Once it’s done, it’s easier to keep organized.  You find yourself putting things back in its place.

Start with knowing that you will need two or three hours to organize.  Depending on the complexity of the job, maybe even two or three days.  Only start when you have the time and energy.

If you don’t have two or three hours, divide each room into zones, then work one zone at a time.  Once you start, you will feel more inclined to continue.  The key is not to overwhelm yourself, or you won’t feel compelled to continue.

First determine, how long have I had this item?  The best rule of thumb is this:  If you haven’t used it, or haven’t worn it in the last 6 months to one year, chances are you won’t.  So get rid of it!  Give it to a friend or donate it to Goodwill.

Determine what you will:

1.  Keep,

2.  Give away or donate,

3.   Trash

Next, decide what this closet will be storing.  Will you need space savers and closet organizers like racks, bars, bins, shelves or a combination?

Obviously, shirts, blouses, pants and slacks will need hangers.  Sweaters will need bins or baskets.  Consider how you will store jeans, purses, hats, belts, shoes, scarves, lingerie and so forth.

Think ergonomics.  Items used or worn often, keep up front or on lower shelves.  Less often used or worn, further back or on higher shelves.

Design tip:  You can create textural interest by simply using different shapes, styles and colors of decorative baskets.  Baskets are a decorative alternative to plastic bins.  Or if baskets aren’t in the budget, use colored plastic bins.  They come in many different sizes and colors.

You’ll want plenty of bins and baskets for storing clothing items.  Arrange your clothing by seasons.  You can also arrange your clothing by color.  Don’t forget you’ll need plenty of storage for shoes.  You can choose from a variety of styles from hanging shoe bins to box containers.

Wooden hangers are more expensive than plastic, but can certainly add a decorative touch.  Felt hangers are popular because they keep your clothing from slipping off.  And don’t forget the cedar hangers for an aroma that’s sure to keep your closet smelling great.

Keep sweaters together, blouses together, jeans, and so forth.  Never stretch socks over each other, or you’ll loosen the elastic.  Hide underwear and lingerie in drawers.  You can store belts on hooks or in drawers.

Keep a short stepladder handy for higher reaches.

Finally, add a picture on the closet wall.  It’s like decorating another room.

As the saying goes, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.

Organizing the closet clutter frees up the mind and spirit and brings peace into your space.
